Dr. Sam's Story (continued from Healthy Brain Program)
When I ask my patients and friends what, if any, concerns they have about aging, I'm surprised by how many say they want to avoid Alzheimer's or any kind of cognitive decline. When I ask why that's top of mind, many point to their parents.
We know that Alzheimer's affects more people every year. In 2015, 5.1 million were diagnosed in the US but by 2025, 7.1 million are projected to be affected. That's a 40% increase in 10 years. That number jumps to 16 million in 2050! Why? What's going on?
So, off I go like a nosey bull dog into my researcher-reporter mode with a healthy leaning towards self-experimentation. I'm really curious about this. Is it curable? What causes it? Is it preventable? If so, how? How can we best help ourselves prevent it? What are the mechanisms of injury and repair?
Dr. Daniel Amen says, "Alzheimer's starts in the brain 30-50 years before symptoms." Early on I learned that "brain fog" and increasingly searching for words might be early signs.
This is where it gets a little personal. Increasingly searching for words was slowly becoming my superpower. Never was it more apparent to me than when talking philosophy or world view with my brilliant partner and son over another healthy (usually keto), gourmet dinner. We'd be talking about things to which I had given considerable thought and had strong opinions that I wanted to communicate, and I would slow our conversation because it took me so much time to "find the words". I don't know how much they noticed, but it seemed new for me and I sure noticed it and was frustrated by it.
I'm inspired by the idea of optimum human potential and I know based on years of clinical experience as a chiropractor, ketogenic weight loss expert, nutritionist and all around natural health care advocate, that we can get better as we get older...we can be healthier next year than we are right now based on the choices we make. So what choices should we make to get rid of brain fog and stay mentally bright and shiny?
